as vermiculite and perlite the same thing?

I asked Home Depot for vermiculite, perlite who reported the same thing, but I'm not so sure of himself. Vermiculite is also used by suppliers of the pool, but I'm not so sure is such that you would use vermiculite for a garden square foot. Any help?
